Burnside War Memorial Hospital (BWMH)

Kensington Road, Toorak Gardens

The site and the buildings that the Hospital operates on have been leased from the City of Burnside since 1950.

History of the site

Originally, the Site was gifted to Council by Otto von Reiben in 1944 for the purposes of establishing a hospital.

A portion of the Site was subsequently leased to the BWMH and has been operating as a hospital since 1950. Currently, the hospital buildings are occupied by the BWMH under three registered leases, each of which will expire on 31 July 2016.

Why are you letting me know?

The BWMH is now seeking to surrender the existing leases, and enter into a new 21 year lease for the hospital buildings and associated facilities. A longer lease will provide the BWMH with longer term security and enable them to strategically plan for the future operations of the Hospital.

As the site is classified as ‘Community Land’, any lease for this site that exceeds five years can only be granted after the community has been consulted. This is in accordance with the Local Government Act 1999.

This proposed lease does not include Attunga Gardens. These gardens remain open for the community as unleased public land.

How do I have my say?

The Burnside War Memorial Hospital (BWMH) community engagement was open from 7 – 28 June 2016.

The outcome of the community engagement was essentially in support of the proposal and can be summarised as follows:

    • The BWMH provides a valuable service to Burnside Council ratepayers as well as people from all over South Australia.
    • The site was gifted to the community for a hospital and community gardens and should continue as such.
    • To enable BWMH’s long-term security and strategic planning for the site, a 21-year lease is appropriate.

The BWMH is situated at 120 Kensington Road, Toorak Gardens and comprised in Certificate of Title Volume 5859 Folio 365. The land is Council owned and leased to the BWMH, pursuant to three registered leases, except for the western part of the site – Attunga Gardens.

The BWMH sought to surrender the existing leases, and enter into a new 21-year lease for the hospital buildings and associated facilities. A longer lease will provide the BWMH with long-term security and enable them to strategically plan for the future operations of the hospital.

At the Council meeting on 12 July 2016, the Burnside War Memorial Hospital was granted a 21-year lease on the premises with the Attunga Gardens retained by Council.
