Streetscapes provide a valuable contribution to the character and amenity of a place. The City of Burnside Streetscape Guide has been developed to provide guidelines for streetscape development throughout the City.

High quality streetscapes offer a range of benefits to residents and other users, including increased safety, an improved balance between natural ecosystems and built environments, improved mental and physical health for residents and visitors, spaces for passive and active recreation, places for neighbours to interact, increased civic pride, economic growth and increased property values.

Streetscape Guide

The City of Burnside’s Streetscape Guide has been developed to provide a clear vision for what the community can expect from the City’s public spaces when a street, or elements within a street, are to be redeveloped or updated, by outlining the materials and elements to be used. The selection range takes into account heritage aspects, the general aesthetics of the precincts within the City, as well as environmentally, socially and financially sustainable practices. With the use of the completed Guide, the City of Burnside’s streetscapes will be engaging, functional and cohesive, using fit-for-purpose and cost-effective infrastructure.

The Guide works alongside other City of Burnside policies and strategies, in particular the Urban Tree Strategy 2014-2025, which highlights measures to protect the City's tree canopy cover.

Council is seeking feedback on the Draft Streetscape Guide before it is finalised and adopted.

    The City of Burnside sought feedback on the Draft Streetscape Guide from 16 October – 6 November 2017.

    The City of Burnside Streetscape Guide was developed to provide guidelines for streetscape development throughout the City.

    Participants were asked which considerations they believed most important in relation to streetscapes within the City. 52 per cent of the respondents selected ‘pedestrian and cyclist friendly’ and 48 per cent of the respondents selected’ maintenance of heritage aspects and character of an area’ as important to them.

    Participants were also asked how they use the City of Burnside streetscapes. 88 per cent of the respondents selected ‘walking/running for recreation or exercise’ and 85 per cent selected ‘driving’ as their most common use.

    Participants in this community engagement were asked for their favourite street within the City of Burnside. The majority of responses referred to Alexandra Avenue in Toorak Gardens and Rose Park. This street was chosen for many reasons including but not limited to the following characteristics:

    · Tree-lined with large, shady trees

    · Central median strip

    · Well-manicured lawns

    · Green, quiet space

    Generally there was a positive spread of ‘favourite streets’ throughout the City of Burnside, indicating that there are a large number of areas that people appreciate and have an attachment toward.

    Those participating in the community engagement were asked for any other comments or thoughts they would like considered in relation to the City of Burnside’s Streetscape Guide. The majority of the participants commented on the trees within the City. Their main concerns relate to choosing the correct tree selection, ie choosing natives and trees suitable for the climate. There were also suggestions to increase the plantings and therefore the tree canopy. Tree lined streets are important to the City of Burnside community. From the responses, it is clear that verges, kerbs and gutters along with residential and commercial development are also significant.

    While none of the feedback received by the community suggested any changes were required to the proposed Guide, the opportunity was taken to include a summary of the nominated ‘favourite streets’ and some commentary about the significant impact trees have on creating valued streetscapes.

    The final Streetscape Guide has considered results of the community consultation process and was adopted on 28 November 2017.
