Council seeks your comment to develop a strategy for Trails within the City of Burnside.
What is a Trail?
A trail is defined as an established route, path or track that can be used for non-motorised recreation, such as walking, running, cycling, mountain-biking and horse-riding. Trails typically have unsealed or natural surfaces and pass through natural areas, parks, reserves or urban areas. Trails can be short distance, long distance or can be interconnected sections of trail linked and navigated with signage and maps. Trails can be used for commuting, exercise, recreation and tourism experiences.

Why Develop a Trail Strategy?
The City of Burnside Trail Network comprises approximately 37km of trails and currently provides opportunities for passive and active recreation.
The City of Burnside is currently developing a Recreational Trail Strategy to review existing assets and determine future direction for the trail network. The strategy will guide the development and future management of trails to ensure trails are sustainable and meet community needs.
The first stage in the development of the trail strategy was to undertake a trail audit in 2016 and review existing trail assets to determine the location, condition, linkages and level of use of Burnside’s trails. The project is currently at Stage 2 and is now undergoing community consultation to aid in guiding the development of the Draft Recreational Trails Strategy.
Stage 1 - Trail Network Audit
The Network Audit was conducted in 2016 and provides detailed information, mapping and analysis on trails within the City of Burnside. The Audit was conducted to determine:
- the location, condition and use of the existing trail network;
- trail assessment based on international best practice guidelines and relevant Australian Standards;
- links to the greater regional open space and trail network;
- acknowledge and consider important biodiversity values; and
- preliminary recommendations regarding the future direction of the trail network based on the audit findings.
The Audit provides the basis for the development of the Draft Strategy Document in Stage 2.
Stage 2 - Draft Strategy & Consultation
Building on the information and data produced during Stage 1, a draft Recreational Trail Strategy Document is currently being developed. The Strategy will review strategic documents, trends, current practice, relevant standards and provide a vision and recommendations for the Burnside Trail Network.
During this Stage, consultation will be undertaken with key Stakeholder groups and the wider community to determine how the network is presently being used, strengths, issues and future aspirations.
To get involved with the development of the Draft Strategy, please complete the survey to have your say. Community feedback is crucial in the development of a Trail Strategy which will ensure a sustainable and engaging trail network for the local community and visitors.
Stage 3 - Finalisation and Endorsement
During this Stage the Trail Strategy is refined and further developed based on Stakeholder and Community feedback. Once the Strategy document has been finalised, it will then be formally adopted by Council.
