Update
All local councils in South Australia are required by the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 to develop and use a Plan for the management of dogs and cats within their council area. These Plans require endorsement by the Dog and Cat Management Board, which is responsible for the planning, promotion and provision of advice about the effective management of dogs and cats throughout South Australia. It is important to note that changes to the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 were passed in Parliament during July 2016, with many new changes being introduced on or before 1 July 2018.
The City of Burnside Dog and Cat Management Plan 2018 – 2023 (the Plan), was prepared in accordance with the Act to guide the management of dogs and cats within this council area for the next five years. The Plan for the City of Burnside contains recommendations for a range of actions to be undertaken by the Council to achieve the aims and desired outcomes of the City’s Strategic Community Plan 2016 – 2026 and is subject to ongoing review in line with any legislative changes to requirements.
The draft City of Burnside Dog and Cat Management Plan 2018 – 2023 was released for public consultation following initial review by Council from 18 June 2018 – 9 July 2018.
Approximately 70 valid responses were received during the consultation period. To review the summary of the responses received in relation to the draft Plan, please view the Council Report on page 287 in the Document Library (above right) of the screen. The Plan was then reviewed and amended in line with the community consultation outcomes.
On 28 August, Council resolved to adopt the revised City of Burnside Dog and Cat Management Plan 2018 – 2023 and forward the document to the Dog and Cat Management Board for final endorsement. Council also resolved that no changes be made to the current off leash use of parks for dog exercise, without community consultation.
