Consultation has concluded

The City of Burnside invites you to comment on the Draft Environment and Biodiversity Strategy that will shape a sustainable, resilient and biodiverse future for our City.

The Vision

The purpose of the Environment and Biodiversity Strategy is to provide a focused strategic direction based on the guiding policy principles, adopted by Council, after consultation with our community.

This Strategy will assist the City to progress towards resilience and living sustainably. It provides strategic direction on the management of the precious natural assets of the City of Burnside so that they are restored, protected, conserved and/or maintained, as appropriate. It will also assist and encourage the current and future generations of residents and visitors to value our environment and its biodiversity, and take care of it, and all of the current and potential life forms living with the City, for the benefit of our current and future community

The Strategy

The Environment and Biodiversity Strategy will be delivered through three Goals:

Goal 1 – Sustainable City

The City of Burnside’s goal to be a Sustainable City recognises the importance of environmentally sustainable development, sustainable living and sustainable management of its operations.

Goal 2 – Connected and Resilient Biodiverse Landscapes

The protection of biodiversity is not purely about protecting the myriads of life-forms that share the world with humans; it is also about ‘ecosystem services’ that are of direct benefits to humans. When a naturally occurring species is lost from an area this is a “local extinction” and it is a step towards global extinction. It is the City of Burnside and the people living here who have the responsibility for ensuring the conservation of the biodiversity in the municipality.

Goal 3 – Protected and Valued Water Resources

To protect water resources for use now and in the future the City of Burnside can use Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) principles, develop alternative water supplies and minimise the use of water in its operations, seek aquifer storage and recovery opportunities, and, develop stormwater management plans as part of the Waterproofing the East Project.

Council is seeking feedback on the draft Environment and Biodiversity Strategy before it is adopted.

You are invited to comment on the Environment and Biodiversity Strategy to indicate that it fulfils your expectations and desires for a sustainable, resilient and biodiverse future for our City
