** UPDATE 15 November 2021 **

Works for the traffic calming upgrade in Dulwich Avenue commenced on 15 November 2021. These works are expected be be completed by 25 January 2022.

Speed restrictions and detours will be in place during this time.

** UPDATE **

The traffic calming upgrade in Dulwich Avenue is currently in the design stage. Once the design is finalised, procurement for the project will commence.

Construction is due to commence in October/November 2021. The upgrade is expected to be completed in December 2021, before Christmas.

Due to community feedback, Council will not be progressing with the flashing lights component at the Wombat Crossing or the two solar powered speed detecting variable message signs.

Council is progressing with the installation of two raised intersection treatments and raising the existing Wombat Crossing by 25mm.

BACKGROUND:

The City of Burnside proposes to install traffic calming measures in Dulwich Avenue to ensure greater road safety for residents, pedestrians and motorists.

These proposed changes will enhance the benefits of the existing Wombat Crossing, ensuring it is more visible to motorists.

Traffic calming is the installation of safety solutions to slow or deter traffic, encouraging safer and more responsible driving.

The proposed changes

It is proposed that in late 2021:

• the existing wombat crossing on Dulwich Avenue, adjacent the intersection with Gurney Road, will be upgraded with an increase in height of 25mm and with flashing lights fitted with guards (see example on the right).

• a raised intersection, that features coloured asphalt, will be installed in the Dulwich Avenue / Thornton Street intersection.

• a raised intersection, that features coloured asphalt, will be installed in the Dulwich Avenue / Mill Street intersection.

• two permanent solar powered speed radar signs will be installed on Dulwich Avenue at the intersections with Thornton Street and Mill Street.

How will this affect me?

These changes will have no impact to public transport operating on Dulwich Avenue or to the access of East Waste collection trucks into Thornton Street or Mill Street.

There will be no change to the level of lighting at the Wombat Crossing. The street lighting will be reviewed at the proposed new raised intersections and will be upgraded if required; however the lighting will not be to the same extent as that at the Wombat Crossing.

There will be road noise from vehicles crossing the raised intersections. This noise is the same as that at the existing Wombat Crossing. There will be no change to the road noise currently experienced at the Wombat Crossing.

During construction work, there will be traffic management for safety within the work zones. Some work may require detours to be in place.

What happens next?

Council’s construction contractor will advise Dulwich Avenue residents prior to work commencing.
