Update

In May 2018, Council received a formal request from Alexander Symonds Surveying Consultants on behalf of Cedar Woods, requesting approval of street names for Stage 1 of the Glenside development being Jacaranda Boulevard, Aleppo Street, Peppercorn Lane and She-oak Lane.

The City of Burnside wanted to generate community awareness and seek feedback on the proposed assignment of road names. To view the methods of engagement please refer to the Council Report (view Report from page 403) located in the Document Library.

Community consultation on the proposed road names commenced on 15 August and submissions were accepted up to close of business on 12 September. Respondents were requested to provide their reasons if suggesting alternative names. Approximately 30 responses were received.

Peppercorn Lane was the most popular street name. To see some of the commentary received, please refer to the Council Report (view Report from page 403).

Based on the responses, three of the proposed names being Jacaranda Boulevard, Peppercorn Lane and She-oak Lane (without the hyphen) appeared to be generally supported by the community, with thought required to select an alternative fourth name.

At the conclusion of the consultation process, Cedar Woods were advised that the community were generally supportive of Jacaranda Boulevard, Peppercorn Lane and She-oak Lane (without the hyphen), however Aleppo Street was not supported. In October 2018, a further request was received from Cedar Woods seeking to substitute Aleppo Street with Banksia Street. Banksia is a species indigenous to the area and is consistent with the flora theme.

Council’s Naming of Public Places Policy states that proposed road names will be appropriate to the physical, historical or cultural character of the area concerned and be derived from one of the following:

· Aboriginal names

· Early explorers, pioneers, settlers and other eminent persons

· Local history

· Mining, industry or other historical usage

· Thematic names such as flora, fauna or ships

· War / casualty

A plan that delineates the new roads that has been assigned a street name, together with a copy of the Council’s resolution are both available for inspection at the Council’s principal office, 401 Greenhill Road, Tusmore or in the Document Library (right of the screen).
