Project Overview

The Kensington District Cricket Club and Burnside Rugby Union Club (the Clubs) currently occupy separate ends of the same clubrooms, centrally located in Kensington Wama / Kensington Gardens Reserve. The existing clubrooms were constructed in two parts in 1950 and 1970. The existing clubrooms are in poor condition, lacking modern amenities and are not suitable for junior and female cricket and rugby players.

A new clubroom facility has been designed to sit on the same footprint, serving as a home for both clubs, while also providing a range of benefits to the community. The clubrooms will be reconstructed in 2025.

The Clubs have sourced grants from the State and Federal Governments, and have arranged for the design documentation and submission for development approval. In line with a Memorandum of Understanding with the Clubs, Council will manage the procurement and construction stages of the project.

Funding Partners

  • The project will be funded by the following contributions:
  • $3.6m from the Federal Government.
  • 2.67m from the SA Government’s Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing.
  • $2.9m from the City of Burnside.

Project Deliverables

  • Six changerooms meeting universal design standards.
  • Umpire changerooms.
  • Accessible change room.
  • Medical room.
  • Clubrooms with integrated bar and kitchen (with internal and external
  • servicing access), suitable for a variety of uses.
  • External deck with viewing area to Parkinson Oval.
  • Storerooms for club equipment.
  • Gymnasium.
  • Elevator and ramp from ground floor to first floor.
  • Integration with existing site landscape and hardscape areas.

The new clubroom facility will result in substantial benefits to the broader community including use of the gym and changing facilities; use of the main clubrooms space, which can be configured for use as both a function venue and a flexible fitness/training studio; and access to the bar and canteen, which can be accessed from inside and externally. Council will assist to maximise community use of the facility.

Additionally, the new facility will enable greater participation of women and junior players of both cricket and rugby, which is currently limited due to the poor condition of the existing clubrooms. Facilities will be compliant with accessibility and sporting requirements.

Please see further details on the attached flyer on the right hand side.
