Pursuant to section 202 of the Local Government Act 1999, the City of Burnside is consulting with the community to ask if a proposal by the Glenunga Tennis Club for a new long-term lease over the tennis clubrooms, and associated licence over the tennis courts on Kingsley Avenue Reserve, Glenunga, with a term of up to 25 years, is acceptable.
History of the site
The Glenunga Tennis Club (GTC) was formed in 1927 and has occupied its current clubrooms for a considerable period of time.
Currently, the clubrooms are occupied by the GTC pursuant to an expired lease on holdover with an annual permit in place over four tennis courts at specific times for the current financial year.
The GTC’s clubrooms consist of an 80-year-old single storey, galvanised iron shed (converted to games room), and a 53-year-old brick/masonry extension that houses a single amenities room, kitchen and office room. Due to the reactive soils that are common in this neighbourhood, and two large trees that are in close vicinity, significant structural issues are emerging, causing the structures to move independently of each other and the extension has separated from the main building.
What is proposed?
The GTC is seeking to partner with Council to demolish the existing clubrooms and construct a new one story clubroom that can account for the reactive soil environment, and is consequently requesting long-term tenure over the clubrooms and tennis courts.
