Background
The existing permapine fence between the playground and boom gate in Hazelwood Park is in very poor condition, having suffered from termite damage and rot, with a number of the timber sections falling apart. As such, this fencing is due to be replaced.
What is proposed?
Council is committed to using environmentally sustainable materials, increasing use of recycled content, and supporting a circular economy. It is proposed that the existing fencing be replaced with a new fence identical to the new fence installed in 2021 nearby the playground, replacing the timber components with a recycled composite material. The extended section would include gaps every 6 m or so to enable access and egress to the car park, while providing some additional protection to park users.
Replacing this fence with a recycled product progresses Council's strategic environmental and sustainability goals, as well as eliminating the risk of rot and termite damage and reducing maintenance costs.
The new fencing would be installed along a similar alignment, however the location of the existing trees will be taken into account.
The approach proposed is consistent with the Hazelwood Park Conservation Management Plan, and considered appropriate from a Heritage perspective.
A map showing the extent of the proposed fencing is provided, as is a photo of the same fencing which was recently installed around the playground area.
Extending the fencing in this location is proposed given the proximity of this area to both the playground and the car park. There are currently no plans to provide additional fencing further around Hazelwood Park.
