Update

The Draft Sport and Recreation Strategy 2013-2023 engagement closed 13 September 2013. The engagement process was designed to ensure that a wide cross-section of people were given an opportunity to provide comments for consideration. A random telephone survey of City of Burnside residents was undertaken in order to find out the sporting and recreation needs of the community, and also to determine the future priorities for Council. The study found that Council is meeting the demands of its residents and that current residents are generally content with the current services provided. There was no desire for significant investment of funds in projects, other than in the ones already identified by Council – George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside and Glenunga Reserves upgrades.

This Draft Sport and Recreation Strategy was adopted to provide long term planning for Council’s contribution to the community’s future active and passive recreational pursuits. The purpose of the Sport and Recreation Strategy is to ensure that the City of Burnside is able to meet the minimum needs of our community in a socially, environmentally and financially sustainable and responsible manner.

This Strategy relates back to the Be the Future of Burnside Strategic Community Plan 2012-2025. It sets out a desired outcome for sport and recreation services in the City. This desired outcome is to deliver a range of fit for purpose sport and recreational opportunities and facilities that foster healthy lifestyle pursuits.

To support the delivery of this desired outcome, four strategic objectives will guide the development of recommendations of the City of Burnside Sport and Recreation Strategy. These are that Council, through its service delivery, will aim to:

  1. Provide fit for purpose and well managed facilities
  2. Enhance urban character, amenity and environment
  3. Increase community awareness, involvement and inclusion; and
  4. Provide diverse, innovative and sustainable programs.

In order for this Strategy to be effective over the next ten years, Council will continue to listen to its community and ensure that it responds to the needs and aspirations of the changing population. This can be achieved by building upon the already diverse range of sport and recreation facilities and programs.
