Consultation has concluded

To ensure that the City of Burnside continues to deliver the best environmentally sustainable hard waste service that meets your needs, we seek your feedback on your existing use and on new collection service options.

Why the need for change?

The overall cost of managing hard waste has increased by more than 40 per cent over the past five years, with an average increase of 30 per cent in collection costs and a significant 58 per cent increase in disposal costs to landfill. Why the need for change?

In 2013 we collected more than 700 tonnes of hard waste from our community however this hard waste stream is sent to landfill.

There is an opportunity to streamline the collection of hard waste in our City and reduce the disposal of hard waste to landfill.

Streamlining hard waste collection

Hard waste collection is offered as a once per year service with the waste stacked on the kerbside outside your property. You are notified of a one week timeframe within which items are collected from your suburb.Streamlining hard waste collection

Proposed services that could be implemented include:

  • Additional hard waste collections offered for a small fee. Residents will still be entitled to one free collection per year (subject to budget provision).
  • A telephone and/or online (‘at call’) booking system for hard waste collection allowing you to book a collection in advance at a time convenient to you.
  • Front property boundary placement where your hard waste is stockpiled within your front property boundary. You can still place the waste on the kerbside if it is not safe or practical to stockpile it within your front property boundary.
  • Encouraging not-for-profit organisations to establish Salvage and Save facilities, whereby hard waste can be recovered, repaired and reused by someone else.

These services can all contribute towards a greater flexibility of service to you and at the same time reduce public safety risks, the impact of hard waste collection piles have on the streetscape amenity and the damage caused by organised scavenging and opportunistic illegal dumping.

Have your say

The City of Burnside is strongly committed to consulting our community on the future of hard waste collection. Complete the survey below and tell us about the type of service you want by 5 pm Monday 19 May 2014.

Next steps

Results of the Future of Hard Waste Survey will be presented to Council for their consideration in late June 2014.
