This consultation has concluded.

Council seeks your input on a proposed bicycle route through your suburb and invites you to a public meeting on Thursday 6 February 2014.

Bicycle Strategy

One of the key components of Council’s Bicycle Strategy is to create a traffic environment that encourages children to cycle to school.

It proposes several routes on quiet local roads that are safer and more attractive to less confident cyclists.

The project this year focuses on the Central Burnside Less Stress Bike Route (previously Super Route).

The Central Burnside route identified in the Strategy is from Hallett Rd through to Fullarton Rd. It is identified in the strategy as using Statenborough St, then Stafford Gr, crossing Portrush Rd at the pedestrian signal north of Alexandra Ave, and then Alexandra Ave.

Proposed Bike Route Options

This leaflet provides details on the three options we have identified for the proposed Less Stress Bike Route, via Alexandra Ave, Watson Ave or Hewitt Ave. We welcome your input and feedback.

Complete Questionnaire

Please complete the survey below to have your say and help us determine an appropriate route. Consultation closes 5 pm Wednesday 12 February 2014.

Attend Public Meeting

You are also invited to attend a public meeting on Thursday 6 February 2014 at 6.30 pm at Council’s Civic Centre to discuss your views and identify a preferred option.

What further information is available?

We realise you may need more detailed information regarding the three potential options identified. For example, how do the Hewitt Ave and Watson Ave routes line up with the route in Norwood that connects to the east? Or what happens on the one-way traffic section of Talbot St?

    The Rose Park and Toorak Gardens Bike Route engagement closed 12 February 2014. Council invited local residents, as well as current and potential bike route users near Alexandra Avenue, Hewitt Avenue and Watson Avenue area to have their say on the possible new routes.
    Council considered a report in March 2013 on the issue of a proposed bicycle route initially intended for Alexandra Avenue through Toorak Gardens and Rose Park. Following the preliminary engagement, two other approaches were also explored with the community and the Rose Park Primary School.
    After considering the engagement feedback and the report, Council endorsed not a specific route, but rather several minor projects throughout Toorak Gardens and Rose Park. These projects focused on several routes on quiet local roads that are safer and more attractive to less confident cyclists.
    Administration sought quotes for the works, and from that process, selected four of the endorsed projects. These included:

    • A bicycle box on Stuart Road at Greenhill Road;
    • A bicycle box on Prescott Terrace at Kensington Road;
    • A kerb ramp and median storage on Gurney Road near Grant Ave;
    • Enhancing the presence of the pedestrian crossing on Grant Avenue near the Rose Park School.

    These projects were completed in the 2013/14 financial year and relate to the Be the Future of Burnside Strategic Community Plan 2012-2025, “an effective transport network that supports safe and efficient movement, connecting people and places.”
