At the City of Burnside the Community Connections Department provides opportunities for our community to connect and enjoy life. We deliver best practice services, programs and events, in fit-for-purpose places and they are provided with outstanding customer service.
The services we provide can be divided into; community learning, community support services, community development and community centres.
Community Learning provides an opportunity for our community to experience a wide range of enlightening and interesting information. There are opportunities for social interaction and lifelong learning through access to a diverse range of lendable library materials, in a range of different formats, themed collections and special events and programs.
The Community Services that we provide include quality support services and innovative programs that we develop in response to our community’s needs. Council, working closely with both the Federal and State Governments, seeks to support the wellness and lifestyle choices of Burnside’s older people and those with a disability.
To create community spirit, skills and resilience Community Development and Centres provide opportunities for people to meet, share and learn in accessible community spaces. Programs and activities have a special focus towards delivering the needs of our local community.
Important service centre locations include the Burnside Library, Burnside Ballroom, Civic Centre spaces, Burnside Civic Community Centre, Dulwich Community Centre, Pepper Street Arts Centre, Glenunga Hub and the George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside.

The Burnside Library aims to provide for the recreational and informational needs of the community with a comprehensive range of materials such as books, magazines, newspapers, e-books and materials for the vision impaired in downloadable formats and for loan. At the library you can also borrow DVDs, Blu-ray Discs and CDs.
The Library is part of the Public Libraries of South Australia One Card Library Management System and will join other public libraries in being able to provide a self-service lending system during next year.
Community Outreach Library Service (Home Library)
Where the library comes to you. This service visits members of the Library who are housebound or unable to access the Library for a variety of reasons, delivering materials to these people for their learning, reading and general enjoyment.
Lifelong Learning Program
The Library provides lifelong learning training by providing courses and materials to meet the needs of the community.
Local History Service
The Library keeps our local history alive with displays, interactive media, digital newspapers, and access to the State-wide Library Catalogue and other electronic sources. Genealogy and family history groups use the purpose built local history room to freely access the historical resources.
Justice of the Peace Service
The City of Burnside provides a Justice of the Peace service for the community, which is staffed through the support of volunteer Justices of the Peace.
Early Childhood Development Program
This program provides a range of high quality programs for young children. These are held in the Library to promote early literacy and encourage a culture of reading. The Library also offers school holiday and after-school programs for school aged children.
Toy Lending Library
The Burnside Toy Lending Library provides toys of various styles for loan to the community to encourage early childhood learning and skills development.
Home Assist Service
Home Assist is funded by a Commonwealth Home Support Program Grant (CHSP), formerly called the Home and Community Care program. Council assists and supports eligible older residents and younger residents with a disability to remain living safely in their own homes. Services include home help, shopping, personal care, respite, social support, minor home maintenance and modification and safety and security in and around the home.
Eastern Region Men's Programs
Older men, including those with memory loss, have a meeting place to get together and socialise and to work on projects, either individually or as a group. There are three socially inclusive activities that include the Men’s Shed program, The Men’s Breakfast Program and social bus trips specifically designed for men.
3Rs (Respite, Recreation & Revitalisation Program)
The aim of the 3Rs program is to assist participants to maintain or learn new skills that will give them confidence to remain active in, and connected to, their community. This program is a flexible and innovative centre and community based program with groups that meet weekly at locations across the eastern region of Adelaide.
Volunteers
The City of Burnside has a strong and vibrant Volunteer program, with many opportunities to be involved with the community through the Community Connections Department.
Pepper Street Arts Centre and Community Arts
Pepper Street is the cultural hub of the City of Burnside. This arts centre empowers our community to be involved in, and have exposure to, arts and culture. The program of exhibitions, arts related workshops and classes, the gift shop, and the onsite coffee shop ensure that Pepper Street is a creative and relaxed environment for arts pursuits.
At the Burnside Civic Centre, the Atrium space is used to support community groups, schools, cultural organisations and artists as a low cost central venue to showcase their works.
Community Events
The City of Burnside provides a range of high quality, entertaining, engaging and informative programs and events for the community such as cultural days, literacy author events, language classes, support for community events, youth focused events and other theme events that celebrate community diversity and community development.
Community Centres
Community Centres are hubs of activity, providing opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy diverse activities, learn new skills and to meet people. Over 40 volunteers provide a valuable service and support the community programs held in the various community centres managed by the City of Burnside. These centres include the Burnside Library, Burnside Ballroom, the Civic Centre spaces, Burnside Civic Community Centre, the Dulwich Community Centre, the Glenunga Hub and the George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside.
Community Grants and Sponsorships
The City of Burnside has a competitive Community Grants Scheme for community projects. Council also provides financial, subsidy and in-kind support sponsorships to eligible local community groups which can demonstrate that their event or activity contributes to community development and wellbeing of our community in Burnside.
Youth Development Program
This program provides opportunities for young people aged between 12 and 25 years to participate in, and contribute to, their local community, increasing their knowledge and develop important life skills. The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a committee of local young people dedicated to providing a voice for young people on matters that impact them. The YAC also plan events and programs that encourage young people in Burnside to engage in the community.
Community Transport Program
The Community Transport Program is a service for our vulnerable residents. Over 30 volunteers provide convenient, regular and affordable transport for shopping, and one-way transport (within a 10 km radius of the Civic Centre) to hospital, medical appointments and some social activities.
Community buses are also available for hire for social outings for both Burnside Community run programs and local not-for-profit groups.
