BACKGROUND:

Have your say on the draft Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2019 – 2023.

Results from the 2017 and 2018 Annual Community Surveys and the May 2019 Representative Strategic Survey were used to determine what is important to our community and to determine the strategic priorities in relation to environmental sustainability. These surveys provide results which are statistically representative of the community’s views. 2,400 City of Burnside ratepayers contributed as part of this process.

Trends from these surveys show:

  • The community places a high level of importance of environmental sustainability and Council initiatives relating to water management, waste reduction and management, the protection of natural areas, and land management.
  • Burnside’s street trees, parks, gardens, reserves and other green areas are regarded by the community as having very high importance.
  • There has been some small decline in community satisfaction in relation to rubbish and green waste management, and bushfire preparation.
  • The community value leadership being demonstrated by Council.

This draft Strategy does not list all tasks and activities undertaken by Council relating to environmental sustainability. Instead it focuses on priorities requiring delivery over the next four years.

Should Council adopt the final Strategy following community consultation, an Action Plan will be developed to detail the projects and services that will contribute towards delivery of each of the strategic priorities.

The draft Strategy presented identifies three key focus areas, in addition to highlighting a set of priorities for each focus area. Please see below for the list of each focus area, its associated priorities and their rationale based on information gathered from the community surveys, data analysis and Elected Member Workshop.
