Consultation has concluded

Pursuant to section 202 of the Local Government Act 1999, the City of Burnside proposes to enter into a new lease with the current occupier of the land, the Kensington District Cricket Club (KDCC) and Burnside Rugby Union Club (BRUC), for the clubroom buildings and associated facilities at Kensington Gardens Reserve, 422 The Parade, Kensington Gardens with a total term of 25 years.

History of the Reserve

In 1932, Kensington Gardens Reserve was acquired by Council and transformed into the largest recreational reserve in the City of Burnside.

The Reserve includes a range of facilities including barbecues, playgrounds, and sporting clubs such as cricket, rugby, lawn bowls and tennis. The existing clubrooms, utilised by Kensington District Cricket Club and Burnside Rugby Union Club, were constructed in 1950 and 1970 respectively. Despite some life left in them, these buildings are in sub-optimal condition and lack modern amenities.

What is proposed?

Previously, a Report was presented to Council by the KDCC and BRUC seeking Council’s support to redevelop the clubrooms at Kensington Gardens Reserve with the aim to modernise existing facilities to meet current standards and community needs.

The report presented to Council, along with all of the relevant attachments, can be found in the 'Report on the Clubroom Redevelopment' folder to the right of screen.

In March 2024, the clubs presented an updated proposal to Council where they identified that they have secured 68.3% of the necessary funds through Federal and State Government grants, as well as the clubs own funds. The proposal sought for Council to contribute up to 31.7% of the remaining cost, which Council resolved to do.

The clubs are also seeking a proposed lease of the redevelopment clubrooms on the same terms as the current leases, with a 5 x 5 year option (up to 25 years in total).

What happens now?

At its meeting on 26 March 2024 Council endorsed the commencement of a community consultation process on a proposed new lease over the KDCC and BRUC clubrooms, with a term of 25 years. This survey forms part of this community consultation process.

As the site is classified as ‘Community Land,’ and the term requested exceeds five years, Council is required to notify you of this lease proposal and seek any feedback or comments you have on this this proposal.
