Consultation has concluded
In response to concerns raised by residents of crashes and ‘near misses’ at the intersection, Council seeks your feedback on a proposal to install a roundabout.
Background
Linden Park residents have raised concerns regarding regular conflicts between vehicles at the intersection of Keyes Street and Torrens Street. Although ‘Give Way’ signage, adequate sight distance and pavement bar medians are in place at this intersection, ‘near misses’ and crashes have continued to occur.
The pavement bar medians (a narrow painted median island with raised yellow pavement bars) that were installed to emphasise the existing ‘Give Way’ signage - a method that has been successful on other streets in the City of Burnside in reinforcing the give way – has proven unsuccessful at this intersection. To resolve this issue, and following consideration of the nature of the crashes occurring at the intersection, it is recommended that the most appropriate traffic control device for this location is a roundabout.
Roundabout Treatment
A roundabout will require vehicles to slow down and give way at this intersection.
Installing a roundabout will result in a small loss of on-street parking on Keyes Street, with no parking 20 metres from each corner.
Street lighting will also be reviewed and potentially upgraded to ensure adequate and safe lighting at night or in poor light conditions.
The centre of the roundabout will be landscaped consistent with current Council practices (see example below).
