Proposed Naming of Public Place Kensington Wama / Kensington Gardens Reserve Practice Net Facility - the ‘Jamie Panelli Nets’

At the Council Meeting on 18 August 2026, Council noted the outcomes of the community consultation on this matter and resolved to approve the naming of the eastern cricket practice nets at Kensington Wama/Kensington Gardens Reserve as the “Jamie Panelli Nets” pursuant to Section 219 of theLocal Government Act 1999.

Council approved the installation of associated signage, subject to Council's standard requirements relating to design, siting, public safety and asset management and notes that all costs associated with the fabrication and installation of the signage are to be met by the Kensington District Cricket Club.

In 2021, the Kensington District Cricket Club (the KDCC) upgraded the eastern cricket practice nets located at Kensington Wama/Kensington Gardens Reserve at its own cost. The upgrade improved the functionality and safety of the facility for both cricket participants and approved users.

On 1 April 2026, the KDCC submitted a formal request seeking Council approval to name the facility the “Jamie Panelli Nets” and to install 2 signs on the nets. The signs will feature the name and conditions of use of the eastern cricket practice nets.

The proposal recognises Mr Jamie Panelli’s long-standing contribution to the KDCC and broader cricket community over many years through his involvement as a player, coach, administrator and life member.

As the practice nets are located within Council-owned community land that is publicly accessible and regularly used by a range of reserve users, any proposal to formally name the facility and install associated signage requires Council to undertake a community engagement process in accordance with the Local Government Act 1999 and Council’s Naming of Public Places Policy before any decision can be made. Council is seeking your feedback on the proposed name and the request to install 2 signs on the eastern cricket practice nets.

The results of this community engagement will be presented to Council for a decision on the proposed naming and associated signage.
